Everest Region: Home To The Sherpas And Ancient Culture

Lying in the Northern region of Nepal, the Everest region is home to the Sherpa mountaineering pioneers. They are the base of the area; with them, every trek can scale.

As this region lies near the border of Tibet’s Autonomous Region, the people there are highly influenced by their culture. The Sherpas are also known as Sherwa, the Tibetan ethnic group.

Likewise, they primarily speak the Sherpa language but also communicate the Nepali language. So, yes, they are often multilingual, as some can speak fluent English, and climbers and trekkers speak other languages.

Moving on to their culture, they are mostly Buddhists, and their main festival is Lhosar (Gyalpo Lhosar, which falls in February or March on the English calendar). Also, they have an effortless lifestyle.

Most of the Sherpas in the mountain region are elite trekkers and often act as guides for travelers. Furthermore, they are highly known for their friendly hospitality.

History And Background Of Everest Region As Trekking Paradise

In 1953, when Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary first scaled Mount Everest, this region gained colossal popularity and came into the limelight. Following through, several trekkers and travelers followed in their footsteps and started to reach the area to go on treks.

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary are influential figures in the Khumbu region. This is why, when the Lukla airport was established, they called it Tenzing-Hillary Airport after them.

As it gained popularity, it was called the Everest Base Camp trek, and back in the day, there was no option for camping trekking. Hence, when the flow of trekkers increased, the locals started to sell tea, cookies, and snacks from their huts.

It slowly generated the idea of teahouse trekking, and over time, trekkers, guides, and camping staff started to make their stops at such teahouses. Again, in a period, the locals expanded their services from teahouses to lodging facilities which turned into guesthouses later.

Today, the Everest region is relatively developed, and you will find several lodging and accommodation facilities run by the locals. You will also come across some luxury hotels during your stay there.

Why Is The Everest Region Popular Among Trekkers?

Undoubtedly, the Everest region is at the top of the world. But it has much more to offer than Mount Everest. As you step foot in this region, you are in the lap of the Himalayas.

Best Seasons To Visit The Everest Region

Nepal’s climatic conditions can be explained in four stages; Spring, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter. The peak tourist seasons are usually during the Spring and Autumn, while some also visit during the early Winter. However, during the late Winter, the trekking routes are closed, and the Monsoon also needs more travelers.

Talking about the description, Spring usually falls from March to May. During this season, you will enjoy clear blue skies, blooming wildflowers, and lush and green vegetation. Additionally, the temperature is moderate in addition to that, making it the best season to travel.

As for Monsoon, it falls from July to mid-September. Well, yes, during this season, the flowers are fully bloomed, and the vegetation is green, but trekking is not highly recommended due to heavy rainfall.

During this timeframe, rain occurs almost daily, which constantly probes the risk of landslides, leeches, and slippery tracks. Furthermore, the view is also blurred with heavy clouds.

The autumn season generally starts in mid-September and ends in November. It is one of the good times to trek as the sky is clear and the dust has settled with the end of the Monsoon season.

It can have occasional showers, but the days are full of sunshine with warm temperatures. Likewise, you will have a clear view and cooler nights.

Our last season is Winter, which goes from December through February. The days get chillier, and trekking at high elevations gets riskier with heavy snowfall. Hence, the high passes treks are closed, and you will also find less number of travelers. However, the sky is somewhat transparent, and the days are sunny.
